Top 5 Tips to Stay Motivated to Work Out

Hey guys! So today I am excited to share with you a new series I’m starting on my blog all about fitness and my journey to getting healthy. I hope you all are just as excited as I am about this series and I hope this can help some of you who are struggling, need advice or have been wanting to set some new fitness goals. Whatever the case may be, this series is here to answer all of your questions and cover a variety of topics regarding health and fitness! Hope you enjoy it 🙂 I’ve had a lot of fun coming up with a bunch of topics to discuss with you all so stay tuned!

For the first part of this series, I’m sharing with you some simple but effective tips to staying motivated with your fitness goals! Here are my top 5 tips:

1. Set attainable goals

If you’re just starting out or have made new fitness goals, make sure they are REASONABLE and ATTAINABLE. You will never be able to accomplish your goals if they are unrealistic. This will only set yourself up for failure. If you’ve taken a long break from working out or maybe you’ve never consistently worked out before, starting off with something attainable is KEY. When setting goals, make sure they are as specific as possible. The more specific your goals are, the better. Try using a specific number of days and make a plan of action as to what you’re going to do. Example: go to the gym 3x a week for 30 minutes focusing on cardio and legs.

2. Write your goals down / tell a friend

I’m huge on writing things down. I literally write down everything! It helps keep me organized and I find that when you write something down, you’re MUCH more likely to actually make it happen. Especially if you take it one step further and tell someone to hold you accountable! Set a goal and tell someone about it, wether that’s your significant other, sister or a girlfriend. You can say something like “hey, I’m really trying to stay more active and take care of my body. Here’s my goals….Will you ask me about them occasionally or help hold me accountable?” OR even ask that person to join you at the gym once a week. But, get those goals in writing and have them somewhere you will see all the time!

3. Remember ‘why’

Remind yourself why you are working out or want to be more active and WRITE those reasons down! It can be so tempting after work to say “screw it” and skip going to the gym, but if you remember why you’ve started working out in the first place, it’s much more motivating to get yourself back on track. Some of the reasons ‘why’ I work out are: I have more energy throughout the day, I feel better about myself, I sleep better at night, my clothes fit better, working out relieves stress and it’s just great for my overall health and wellness. These are just a few reasons that keep me motivated 😉

3. Find something you enjoy

There’s nothing worse than dreading having to go workout. But don’t give up just because you haven’t found your niche yet or don’t like going to the gym. Instead, try a spin class or a yoga class, call a friend to go on a hike, take your dog for a walk, watch a show on the stair master or elliptical, or do an exercise video on youtube. I’ve recently been going to the gym in the mornings instead of after work and I’m surprised how much more I LOVE it! I find myself so much more motivated to get my butt to the gym if I go first thing in the morning. Plus, the gym is usually pretty empty during this time. I find this to be a great way to start off my day. But there are so many different ways to stay active, so pick something you enjoy (or at least tolerate haha) and do it.

5. Treat Yo’ Self

Invest in some activewear that make you excited to workout. As crazy as this might sound, having cute workout clothes motivates me SO much! You can also use this as a way to reward yourself for   hitting your goals. For example, if you meet your goal of working out 3 days a week for the rest of the summer, reward yourself with a new pair of kicks or a new workout outfit!
